Intravenous Therapy (IV Therapy)
What is IV Therapy and How Does It Work?
The human body requires a number of vitamins and minerals in order to function properly. Most of the time a person is able to maintain and use the optimal level of these nutrients through a normal, discriminating diet. The body’s cells take what they need from food, rebuild and repair themselves and allow an individual to live a healthy life.
Sometimes if a person is sick or has a chronic illness, their body becomes unable to absorb vitamins and minerals. The cellular absorption could be slow, disrupted or non-existent. When this happens, cells cannot work properly and they cannot contribute to the healing of the rest of the body.
As the balance of essential elements falls outside of optimal ranges a person can experience pain, unpleasant symptoms that can interfere with everyday life and greater issues associated with chronic illness. Luckily, the body has also been shown to heal itself and manage pain more effectively when specific nutrients and compounds are delivered directly into the blood stream through Intravenous Therapy (IV Therapy.)
Administered directly into a vein using a small needle, IV Therapy bypasses the digestive system and allows nutrients to be absorbed quickly into the blood stream.
Unlike oral dosing, IV Nutrient Therapy conveys nutrients directly into the body’s cells allowing the benefits to begin sooner. This method of dispensing can also be the solution for individuals experiencing digestive complications or who cannot tolerate oral treatments.
What Conditions Does IV Therapy Treat?
Nutrient deficiencies can be caused by a number of conditions including infections, illness, aging or as a result of undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments and those with chronic fatigue.
Below are just some of the patient indications that have seen positive benefits through the use of IV Therapy:
- Autoimmune Disease
- Cancer Therapy Support
- Celiac Disease
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Chronic Hives
- Infectious Liver Diseases
- Macular Degeneration
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Overall Well Being
- Parkinson’s Disease
During your appointment with Dr. Cohen, all of your options for Alternative Treatments will be discussed, including the benefits of IV Therapy. You will answer questions to provide a detailed medical history including information about your past and current nutrition. In addition, testing may be required to determine how your body is absorbing nutrients and how IV Therapy can address specific issues.
How Can I Benefit from IV Therapy?
Often due to illness and even aging, vitamins and minerals are not absorbed correctly into the body. This malabsorption can lead to complications, new health issues and overall general discomfort.
IV Therapy can help you maintain better health and wellness. Benefits may include, increase appetite, higher energy levels and decreased effects of chronic illness. And because IV Therapy is customized to each individual’s particular needs, it can be well tolerated in persons of all ages and with various conditions.
Ultimately, Dr. Cohen will assess your overall health and needs and recommend the Therapy that can benefit you.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Each patient will receive a custom treatment plan. On average, each IV infusion takes 1.5 – 3 hours. Most patients repeat the procedure 1 – 2 times per week depending on their course of treatment. Each individual’s wellness plan is unique however, and only Dr. Cohen will be able to determine the best course of treatment and how long it will last.
Before beginning therapy, each patient undergoes a thorough evaluation. During this appointment, treatment time and options are discussed.. It’s important to remember that Dr. Cohen evaluates each person’s needs individually and develops a comprehensive, tailor-made plan for you.
Are There Side Effects?
Dr. Cohen has extensive training and experience in the administration of IV Therapy and most individuals tolerate the Therapy with a minimum of side effects. The most common side effects are discomfort or bruising at the injection site. If you are put on a regimen of IV Therapy, Dr. Cohen will discuss possible side effects with you.

Types of IV Therapy
IV Therapy can be used to treat a number of conditions and symptoms. The below list is not exhaustive but representative of some the more common IV therapies and how they have helped others.
IV Nutrient Therapy and Myers Cocktail
Intravenous (IV) Nutritional Therapy can deliver high doses of nutrients directly into the blood stream, bypassing the digestive system. This results in much higher concentrations of nutrients available to the body’s cells and tissues than is possible through oral supplementation.
The popular Myers Cocktail developed over 30 years ago by the late John Myers, MD, is a combination of magnesium chloride, calcium gluconate, thiamine, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B complex, vitamin C and dilute hydrochloric acid. It can be used to support adrenal and immune health. Some patients have found relief from chronic fatigue, asthma, fibromyalgia and migraines.
Nutrient Therapy can be used to correct deficiencies, treat infections, diminish inflammation and assist in maintaining health. Some of the more common vitamins and minerals used in IV Nutrient Therapy are:
- B Complex
- Vitamin C
Because each individual is treated according to their own specific needs and body indications, your personalized Nutrient combination and Therapy will be determined by Dr. Cohen.
Glutathione is found naturally in all blood and tissue. An anti-oxidant, it can improve brain and liver function and Glutathione IV therapy has successfully been used in assisting the body to excrete mercury and other metals. Dr. Cohen has used Glutathione IV Therapy to help patients with conditions arising from colitis, arthritis and asthma through detoxification and reduction in inflammation.
Alpha Lipoic Acid IV
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a nutrient found in foods like potatoes, spinach and broccoli. It can also be man-made under controlled conditions and used as a medicine. Alpha Lipoic Acid has been shown to prevent damage to cells in the body and restore beneficial levels of certain vitamins.
Administered as an IV, this antioxidant has been shown to alleviate symptoms of diabetes, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, certain cardiac problems and glaucoma.
Phosphatidylcholine is a substance that is found in the membranes of cells in the human body and is crucial to membrane health. It is also found in common foods such as eggs and soybeans. This substance has been used successfully to break down fat molecules in the body and has been shown particularly effective in neuropathy, liver detox and anti-oxidation. Because it can dissolve fat molecules, phosphatidylcholine IV can be used to treat fat in the blood or arteries, high cholesterol and liver disease. Dr. Cohen has found this form of therapy valuable for treating Hepatitis and fatty liver.
High Dose Vitamin C
Intravenous Vitamin C is another effective form of treatment and can be used as adjunct therapy with Chemotherapy as it can boost the immune system. Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient and an anti-oxidant. It has been used to treat infections, support artery health and the clearing of heavy metals in the blood stream.
